Getting Around Florence

Florence offers a well-developed public transportation system, making it easy to navigate both within the city and to other destinations. Whether you prefer trains, trams, buses, or taxis, the city provides multiple options to suit your travel needs.

Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci – Peretola Airport, FLR) -> link

Florence is served by Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR), also known as Peretola Airport, located just 5 km from the city center. The airport offers domestic and international flights, connecting Florence to major European hubs such as Rome, Paris, London, and Frankfurt.

Transport options to/from the airport:

  • Tram (Line T2): The fastest and most affordable way to reach the city center. The T2 tramline connects the airport to Piazza dell’Unità, near Santa Maria Novella train station, in just 20 minutes. Trams run every 4-5 minutes (day hours) or 7-10 minutes (late hours) from 5:00 AM to 12:30 AM.
  • Taxis: Available outside the terminal, with a fixed fare of €30-35 to the city center.
  • Private Transfers & Car Rentals: Various car rental companies and private shuttle services operate at the airport.

Railway Network

Florence has three main train stations:

  • Santa Maria Novella (SMN): The city’s main station, located in the historic center. It serves high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo) to Rome (1.5 hours), Milan (2 hours), Venice (2 hours), and Naples (3 hours). -> link
  • Firenze Rifredi: A key station for regional and intercity trains, connecting to other Tuscan cities.
  • Firenze Campo di Marte: Used for long-distance trains and special event services.

The train is one of the best ways to explore Tuscany, with frequent connections to Pisa, Sienna, Arezzo and Lucca.

Tram System -> link

Florence’s modern tram system consists of two lines, with expansions planned in the coming years:

  • Line T1: Connects Villa Costanza (Scandicci) to Careggi Hospital, passing through the city center.
  • Line T2: Links Florence Airport (Peretola) to Piazza dell’Unità, near SMN station.

Trams operate from 5:30 AM to 12:30 AM with a high frequency (every 4 minutes during peak hours). A single ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for 90 minutes on both trams and buses.

Bus Network -> link

Florence’s bus system is managed by ATAF and covers the entire city, including suburbs and nearby towns. Buses are frequent but can be affected by traffic, especially in peak hours. Tickets are the same as tram tickets (€1.70 for a single ride).

For tourists, there are also hop-on-hop-off buses, providing guided tours of the city’s main attractions.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing

Taxis are available at designated taxi stands or can be booked via phone or mobile apps like Taxi 4242 or AppTaxi. Florence does not have Uber or other ride-sharing services.

Fixed taxi fares:

  • Airport to city center: €30-35
  • Santa Maria Novella station to Piazzale Michelangelo: ~€15-20

Walking & Cycling

Florence is a pedestrian-friendly city, with most of its historical center designated as a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL -> link). Walking is the best way to explore the city’s landmarks, as many areas are inaccessible to private vehicles.

For eco-friendly travel, Florence offers:

  • Bike-sharing services (RideMovi, available via an app) -> link
  • Scooter rentals for short city trips
  • E-bike tours for exploring the surrounding Tuscan countryside

Travel Tips

  • Buy tickets in advance: Public transport tickets can be purchased at newsstands, ticket machines, and online via the Tabnet or ATAF app.
  • Validate your ticket: Before boarding, make sure to validate your ticket to avoid fines.
  • Avoid driving in the ZTL: If you renti a car, be aware that non-residents cannot enter restricted traffic areas without a permit.

With its efficient transport network, Florence is easy to navigate, ensuring a seamless travel experience for both residents and visitors.
